US air traffic controllers are increasingly seeking second jobs and reporting ill, as they remain on duty unpaid during the federal closure, the transport chief has stated.

"These professionals are wearing thin," the official told Fox News on the weekend, as certain aircraft were halted on the Californian coast due to personnel deficits.

Following the federal closure on 1 October, air traffic controllers, who are deemed essential workers, were told to continue performing their duties without pay.

But some have been absent, causing airports to halt or reduce their plane traffic, which has exacerbated delays due to weather and other issues.

Over 3,000 American flights were delayed on Sunday, and Duffy stated he anticipates the situation to deteriorate further.

"I observe the stress," Duffy remarked in an interview on a weekend program, noting that he had spoken to several controllers to listen to their concerns firsthand.

"They are pursuing side jobs, they're out there searching, 'Can I work for Uber, am I able to find an alternative of income to cover expenses?'" he continued.

The secretary added that on the previous day twenty-two notifications at airfields said travel would be held up due to a shortage of workers - one of the highest since the closure started.

The American federal closure entered its twenty-sixth day on Sunday, rendering it the second-longest halt in the past.

Duffy has consistently cautioned that flight authorities would slow down the quantity of aircraft in the sky if there is a deficit of safety personnel.

In his conversation, he declined to respond directly when asked if it was safe to travel by air in the US, and instead made a personal plea to controllers.

"I require my staff focused on the airspace, not on the finances at home," Duffy stated.

On Sunday, certain flights were grounded at LAX due to employee deficits, causing disruption at the fifth-busiest terminal in the country and among the most crowded in the globe, as well as other flights stretching north to the city of Oakland.

The FAA notice went out at 8:45 AM local time on the weekend. Many flights were back on schedule by midday.

Travel at Newark Airport, however, were postponed an average of over an hour due to staffing shortages, and the authority indicated DFW, the second most active airfield in the country, could experience difficulties from low staffing later in the day.

The FAA advised passengers in the state to check with carriers about updated departure times.

The situation comes ahead of Game 3 of the championship, which is due to be played in Los Angeles on Monday night, and approximately four weeks before the Thanksgiving break, among the peak times to fly in the United States.

Pressure on American aviation helped end a federal closure in two thousand nineteen. At the time, the halt had entered its fifth week and disrupted flight services, including pilot training.

It prompted several air traffic controllers to remain absent on the identical date on January 25, 2019, briefly halting movement at LaGuardia Airport in New York.

That same day, the former president, who at the period was in his initial presidency as leader, agreed to sign a temporary funding measure, effectively ending the federal closure after thirty-five days.
