As Sunbathers Fled Danger, Viral Picture Depicts Rescuer Running ‘Pedal to the Metal’ In the Direction of the Location.

Alexandra Ching, a lifelong inhabitant of Bondi, views the iconic coast as her back yard. On a recent weekend evening, she, along with numerous others in the area, detected cracking sounds reverberating across the community.

“We all thought the same, but I reasoned it was daylight and no one could see them,” she explains. Stepping out of her apartment, she observed people “pouring up Bondi Road”. The faces she saw told her a crisis was unfolding.

As she stood on the road, speaking to a pair who had run up the hill still dripping wet, she noticed someone coming up behind her. The person was a rescuer, running at full speed towards Bondi without shoes from the adjacent Tamarama beach – a distance of 1.5km – while carrying a life-saving kit.

“I caught a voice saying ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I spotted this blur of blue,” Ching describes. “He was simply racing by. He was alone running in the direction that all the others was trying to flee, and hauling that large equipment and without footwear … He’s running into something that undoubtedly every instinct would instruct you to run in the opposite direction.

“Absolutely no pause, but just totally full throttle sprinting.”

An Iconic Image of Bravery During Tragedy

The photo Ching captured of the lifeguard, later named as Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as a prime example of instances of heroism in the wake of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, a second beach safety officer, explained that Doolan, called “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to back up the other members at Bondi, as well as to help emergency personnel, law enforcement and paramedics caring for many those hurt.

Local Outpouring and Support

Doolan’s story was just one of many to be shared by the local area, with the beach facility beside the location of the attack transforming into a impromptu medical station. It was shared that fellow lifeguards were also seen taking action, including rushing into the surf to rescue people needing help.

In the days after the tragedy, messages of gratitude circulated widely. A social media message shared gratitude for the individuals who exhibited that “goodness will always triumph over darkness”.

The team of lifeguards published a message, saying they were “processing what occurred”.

“Our thanks go out to all for your thoughtful messages and support. We are deeply moved by the compassion shown towards our team,” the team wrote. “In time, we will tell our tales in the hope that it helps those involved.”

Local Government Commendation

Waverley council, the local authority that employs many permanent beach safety officers, remarked that the staff acted heroically from the second the violence started until late that night.

“We have heard so many powerful narratives, but the viral picture of Jackson Doolan, running from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help assist the injured is remarkable,” commented a local official.

“These individuals exhibit selflessness every day in keeping our iconic shores safe for the public, but what we observed on that day should be highly praised.

“As we grieve and grapple with the horror of this heinous terrorist attack, I think it is vital that we consider just how much light we have seen in the presence of such hatred.”
