The British designer Antony Price, the visionary UK-based designer behind a series of unforgettable images worn by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has passed away aged 80.

His reputation was built on his architectural shapes and performative fashion, including the soft-colored suits that became famous from the iconic band Duran Duran's classic music video for "the song Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."

This news arrives shortly after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Artist Lily Allen walked in a dress inspired by the iconic black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by Princess Diana.

A Lasting Legacy

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to enroll at the esteemed Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he began designing clothing for men at the company Stirling Copper and was the creator of the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that Sir Mick Jagger sported during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show was launched by outfits on the famed model Jerry Hall, who also wore the wedding dress Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Collaborations with Icons

A frequent collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to blend tailoring for all genders along with his expert craftsmanship in crafting sculptural silhouettes made him a "true original," in the words of the UK's fashion authority.

During the nineties, he commenced designing pieces for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, which included various looks for her tour of the United States following her marriage.

With a vocation that covered over fifty years, Price staged what would be his last show in London recently in conjunction with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: Central to his design philosophy.
  • Performative Style: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

The fashion world says farewell to a true visionary whose impact on the visual landscape of music remains indelibly etched.
