Chernobyl Disaster Shelter Can No Longer Blocks Radiation, Requires Significant Repair – IAEA

A containment structure covering the Chernobyl nuclear reactor in Ukraine has lost its main safety function of containing radioactive material, as announced by the IAEA. This loss of function comes after a drone strike earlier this year that blew a hole in the structure.

Damage from Drone Strike Degrades Safety System

A drone strike in the second month of the year caused a breach in the so-called “new safe confinement” structure. This enormous protective structure, constructed for €1.5bn and completed in 2019, was intended to contain radiation for decades. An IAEA assessment mission found that the drone impact had weakened the structural integrity of the steel arch.

The containment arch's main safety functions, such as confinement, are no longer operational, stated IAEA director general Rafael Grossi. He added that the mission confirmed no lasting harm to its load-bearing structures or sensor systems.

The original 1986 explosion at the Chernobyl plant – at a time when Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union – released radiation across Europe. Although limited repair work has been done, the IAEA stressed that comprehensive restoration is essential. This is needed to prevent further degradation and to guarantee long-term nuclear safety. Ukrainian authorities previously reported that a unmanned aircraft armed with a high-explosive warhead struck the plant, igniting a blaze and damaging the protective cladding.
