RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, pinpointed through surveillance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in hills just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of approach shafts leading to the site... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and each participating jet returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - also known as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over significant areas in Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation shows the UK's leading role, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the minister said.

RAF aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank every member of our armed forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their valour," Healey said. "They were part of numerous British troops deployed over the festive period. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our security, shows how UK forces are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and strong abroad."

Last December, the American forces executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" on Daesh sites in the country, following an assault claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports Daesh still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Syria and Iraq.
