A uniquely yellow-colored residential building visible behind helped us locate the video.
We are analyzing video footage and photographs posted earlier today that show the aftermath of a reported vehicle-borne explosive explosion that Russian officials state fatally injured a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.
Officials in Russia confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that detonated and that he succumbed of his injuries. A probe is currently ongoing.
Our starting point to verify the location from which the images originated was based on posts saying the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the Russian capital.
We used panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to corroborate the unique yellow colour of a nearby apartment building captured in the footage.
Locating other structures, lamp-posts and the street layout confirmed the exact location the footage were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the videos were new and that the images had not been digital alteration.
