Manchester United Set to Secure Germany Forward Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are finalising completing the signing for prolific German forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from Bayern Munich.
A Marquee Signing for the WSL Side
Schüller, who has half a year remaining on her contract, is known as a prolific goalscorer for her club and the national team. Having netted over 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. This signing will be seen as a major coup for the Women’s Super League side.
Departure from Bayern was expected after she was seen holding back emotions while thanking the German club’s fans following a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
It was reported in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its leading forwards. According to multiple sources, the formalities for the transfer are now finalised.
Reliable Goal Threat to Boost United's Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s signing is expected to provide a major boost to United’s attacking options. Schüller has been remarkably consistent with her finishing in the Bundesliga.
- For seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She claimed the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Gathering Steam at Carrington
Securing Schüller’s signature comes at a time when the club appear to be gathering positive momentum.
Their recent on-pitch successes feature qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the winter break has brought further business:
- The signing of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The new deal for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since joining in 2023.
Regarding the midfielder's extension, a club official commented: “She has become a vital part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability allows her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
The new defender, having arrived from a side from the NWSL, added: “You can feel how much the club have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
