Minister States Ministry of Defence Looking at Potential Threat from Chinese Cars, with Personnel Advised to Avoid Secret Talk in Vehicles.

An defense minister has confirmed that the MoD is currently looking into the potential threats posed by Chinese-made vehicles, while personnel have been told to refrain from discussing classified information in all cars.

Security Advice for MoD Staff

In a recently aired interview on a radio station, a defence minister addressed claims that Ministry of Defence officials have been told not to discuss classified material while riding in Chinese vehicles.

The minister explained that the ministry is “looking into” cars from China within its fleets, but stressed that safety is a concern in all modern cars.

Our department has a collection of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones represent a tiny fraction.
But regardless of if you’re driving a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our staff is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence technology into their vehicle, to avoid having conversations at a classified classification in any vehicle, because of the increasing threats of surveillance that exist in every single vehicle, to only have those secret conversations in protected areas. This is a wise and sensible thing for anyone worried about security.

After it was put to him that it would be wise for the ministry to cease using all cars from China, the minister responded: That is precisely what we’re investigating at the moment.”

Broader Defence Context

The revelation follows reports from Scandinavian countries have warned the United Kingdom to the existence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese buses, which could allow China to switch off buses and bring chaos to transport systems.

Furthermore, a Russian intelligence vessel was reportedly shining laser beams at RAF pilots, described as a “highly dangerous” action by government representatives.

The wider defence environment underscores the significance of robust protocols and vigilance in all aspects of government operations, from transport use to communication habits.
