Per public records statistics, more than two thousand young people who were either exploited or arrived in the UK by themselves to claim asylum disappeared from social services’ care during the past year.

Report Discloses Disturbing Statistics

A study titled “Until the Danger Ceases” filed information requests to child welfare offices across the United Kingdom.

Data from one hundred thirty-five government bodies showed that out of 2,335 young people categorized as having been trafficked or believed to be trafficking victims, 864 (37%) were listed as disappeared.

A total of one hundred forty-one local authorities responded to questions about lone child asylum seekers in their care, who numbered eleven thousand nine hundred ninety-nine children. Of these, one thousand five hundred one (13%) were listed as disappeared.

Serious Threat for At-Risk Minors

The study, published by advocacy groups, warns that these populations are at “very high risk” of disappearing from care.

Several victimized young people in the UK are British citizens while others are from other countries.

They are likely to have been subjected to either abuse for sexual purposes or unlawful manipulation, for example by county lines gangs.

Institutional Deficiencies in Care

Government bodies have a legal obligation to secure and help victimized and solo young people under youth safety systems. Nevertheless, there is no released central government data on the issue.

The recent study cautions that considerations such as insecure immigration status can heighten young people’s vulnerability to continued risk, placing them at serious threat of re-victimization and renewed exploitation.

Calls for Measures

The report states there is a “persistent and serious deficiency” in safeguarding and urges municipal councils and law enforcement to make certain following of good practice.

The researchers also urge the National Education Department to ensure all victimized and solo young people can receive proper lodging that prevents being re-victimized.

Lodging Issues

Starting in September 2021, local authorities have been obligated to ensure that all children in care under 16 are located in settings that offer supervision.

Nevertheless, youths in their late teens can still be accommodated in so-called “supervised lodging” that does not give daily supervision.

In exceptional circumstances, these older children can be located in shared facilities, trailers, camping structures, vessels, or communal living with non-family members.

Authorities Statement

An official representative stated: “Our leadership assumed a children’s social care system failing to meet the needs of the state’s most endangered young people.

“Our significant youth welfare and education legislation is the largest reform of minor protection in a generation, fulfilling our mission to eliminate the relationship between young people’s origins and their later achievements.”

The representative stated further that the steps include bettering the supply of protective housing, improved communication, obligating the establishment of interdisciplinary youth safety groups in every area, and introducing a new responsibility on associates to systematically involve schools and youth facilities in their safeguarding arrangements to help stop children being overlooked.
