New York Jets Head Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Incident

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and feels certain the athlete will be OK after being shot in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during their latest talk.

“What reassures me, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn commented. “His wife and his kid, they are doing well and he is expected to recover fully.”

It remained unclear when Boyd would leave the hospital, where his condition is described as serious yet stable.

“Not certain at the moment,” the coach said. “However, I can share, hearing him speak, he felt really upbeat. And again, that puts my mind at ease, given his positive frame of mind and his words reflect that optimism.”

New York police shared video stills earlier this week of a man sought in the shooting of Boyd. The reason behind the incident remains under investigation and officials stated it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. No other injuries as confirmed by officials.

The attack took place in the early morning on Sunday in the area between Madison Square Garden and the iconic square. Boyd, 29, was taken to Bellevue Hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, according to authorities. The shooter fled the scene.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has occupied his thinking “a ton” since the news broke. The coach said that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a newborn.

“My initial concern, he just had a kid,” Glenn noted. “My mind went to his family, worrying about his newborn and I want to make sure that he’s OK. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There is a procedure involved, that I won’t detail, but I’m happy at the fact that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd was inactive in the present campaign, his first with the Jets, after being placed on injured reserve on 18 August with a shoulder issue that required surgery.

Boyd came to New York as a free agent in March and was projected as a key part of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during preseason drills on August 2 and was carted from the field.

Boyd has remained around the team during the entire campaign while working his way back.

“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn stated. “Certainly, he is a regular at our matches. His commitment is total. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, began his career with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by the Vikings out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in last year and then joined Houston’s practice squad after that. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in the spring.
