The sport of boxing has been a notable downturn this season, with a scarcity of big events and markedly reduced thrilling fights than typical. The possibility of a high-stakes and fascinating heavyweight clash between Joseph Parker and Fabio Wardley at the iconic O₂ Arena brings a measure of relief to the challenged industry. The last man standing will with high probability face champion Oleksandr Usyk next season. In stark contrast, the loser is likely to lament the unavoidable deterioration of their earned accolades.

Parker finds himself on a winning run since his last defeat to fighter Joe Joyce three years ago. “This is the biggest bout, currently, in the heavyweight division. These two boxers have taken a risk when neither one needed to make this fight. Parker is the interim WBO titleholder and they have previously mandated the champion to fight him, but he was sidelined. Parker insists on fighting.

“Fabio is also in a fantastic position and he merely needed to be patient for his opportunity. He said ‘No, thanks.’ He desired to compete – and against Parker because it provides him a shot to jump the queue.”

Parker's Viewpoint

Parker, set to be 34 in January, said: “This is all or nothing. I am not thinking about losing. I have respect for my rival and his achievements and his preparation for this bout. But I am on a higher plane and I am intending to prove it on fight night.”

Wardley's Stance

Wardley will be 31 in December, and he said: “It's a huge evening for the both of us. It is undoubtedly the largest contest of my professional life and the most important fight ever. But whenever I face a tougher opponent I elevate my performance. This Saturday will be no exception. The separation between Parker's level and what others believe about me has been a recurring narrative in my boxing life.

“He has been going around the block for a long time, with a lot of fights on his resume. Certainly not is he an senior boxer but he has been in the game for a while and had several tough bouts. I’ve been in a few wars myself and I know they put miles on the clock. He has been in a far greater number of those compared to me.”

The Final Verdict

But the suspicion remains that Parker should prove too seasoned, and too technically proficient, for Wardley. He is expected to triumph a bruising battle with the belief that he is next in line for Usyk – still the world’s best heavyweight by a clear gap.
