Russell Wilson Fires Back at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Regarding Quarterback Comments
NY Giants quarterback Russell Wilson did not hold back on online platforms this week, responding to latest comments from his former coach Sean Payton.
"Tasteless... but not shocked...," Wilson stated on X. "Had no idea you're still bounty hunting 15+ years later through the press."
The quarterback's remarks pointed to the infamous bounty scandal controversy from 2009-11, when Payton was coaching the Saints.
At that time, the NFL found that the Saints had rewarded players for delivering aggressive tackles on opponents. As a result, Payton received a suspension from the league for one season.
The Cause of the Recent Exchange
The quarterback's response came after Payton made comments following Denver's historic comeback win over the Giants. The coach suggested that the Giants had "found a little spark" with their new QB, who has replaced Wilson as the first-string QB.
Moreover, Payton implied that he had told team owner John Mara that he would prefer playing against Wilson over Dart.
"I spoke to John Mara recently and I said, 'We were hoping that change would've happened well after our game,'" Payton commented.
Context of the Coach-QB Relationship
- The quarterback was traded to the Broncos from Seattle in 2022 and signed a five-year, $245M contract.
- The team finished 4 wins and 11 losses in his first season prior to Denver brought in Payton, who was returning to coaching after a period in TV commentary.
- The coach benched Wilson late into the 2023 campaign, a decision that prevented the player from getting injured.
Had Wilson remained on the roster by March 2024, his $37 million salary for the following year would have been locked in. In the end, Wilson was let go, ending the contentious split between the quarterback and his mentor.
