The Details Known About the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack
No fewer than 16 individuals lost their lives and more than 40 were wounded when assailants opened fire at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian authorities have called a act of terrorism.
In the latest update, officials have announced the death toll stands at 16, encompassing one of the alleged gunmen. Furthermore, 42 injured people were taken to hospital.
The deceased are still awaiting publicly named, but authorities state their ages range between 10 and 87 years of age.
Listed are the victims who have been named so far.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.
Described as a father-of-five, he worked as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.
“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative remarked.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.
She told the moments leading up to the shooting, saying they had been standing together when the gunfire erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.
The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having faced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
The French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.
Publicly, the Foreign Minister declared that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the statement continued.
One Child
A child who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.
One Israeli Citizen
An Israeli citizen was a fatality in the incident, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
From the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with several in a critical state. Those hurt include two officers who responded to the attack.
A wounded man is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.
Communicating, he described the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.
“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
