New York City's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to make his home in the historic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the rent-stabilised apartment that sparked debate during his election bid.

An Iconic Home

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the official residence for the majority of New York City mayors after the mid-20th century.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a central platform, hesitated to declare he would live there right away following his electoral win in November.

"The choice rested on the security of my family and the importance of directing my full attention on enacting the affordability agenda New Yorkers supported," the Mayor-Elect declared in a statement.

Thanking a Neighborhood

He resided in Astoria, Queens, an area renowned for its abundance of cultural enclaves and international dining.

"To Astoria: many thanks for demonstrating the best of New York City," he expressed.

"While I may no longer live there, Astoria will always live a part of me and my work," he affirmed.

Campaign Controversy

During his race for mayor, Mamdani connected his key pledge – a rent freeze – to his own housing situation.

Yet his opponents, including one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for living in the apartment although he came from a well-known family.

Not All Mayors Stayed

Not every mayor have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, chose to live in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his time in office, which concluded in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg felt it should be a space for official events, and pushed for an extensive renovation of the older mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

As he settles into Gracie Mansion near his inauguration on 1 January, he will be surrounded by an environment far removed from his modest Astoria apartment.

Featuring pale yellow exterior, green shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure situated by the East River.

Within, the ground floor of the classically designed mansion is appointed to reflect the home's original era.

The property, which is said to has five bedrooms, also has increased security measures to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Haunted History

Past occupants have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of former mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors occasionally opened and shutting on their own, and the floors emitted odd sounds.

Former Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "It doesn't matter the skeptics say," he insisted in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

The apartment he is leaving is rent stabilised, which means the city regulates on how much property owners can increase rent each year.

City residents view rent-stabilized housing as essential protections as the housing expenses exceeds the average income.

It was reported Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Per figures from the property website Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
