The New Mayor Vows a 'Dawn' for The Big Apple in First Address
On his first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reimagine” America's largest city, declaring “a different age” and an audacious beginning to his term.
A Historic Mayor
The new democratic socialist, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He additionally marked a milestone by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.
“A moment like this is rare and rarer still is it that the citizens whose hands are upon the levers of change,” Mamdani remarked.
Rejecting counsel to lower expectations, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will lead expansively and audaciously.”
Steering by Democratic Socialist Ideals
Mamdani openly embraced his socialist politics. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not forsake my ideals for concern of being called radical,” he proclaimed to rapturous applause.
The ceremony was a dual event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a old subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over powerful interests.
A Costly Policy Agenda
Mamdani now begins one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a platform including:
- Universal childcare
- Free buses
- A rent freeze for approximately 1 million households
- A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores
The projected $10 billion expense of these programs may pose a hurdle to fund. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the city's top earners and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Facing External Dynamics
The new mayor must contend with skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over offensive past comments.
Mamdani has sought to ease these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.
On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was reportedly unexpectedly productive.
The Basic Tests of Governing
Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in providing city upkeep: trash collection, reducing the rat infestation, fixing roadways, and ensuring smooth transit service.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's public safety record, pointing to historically low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with murders recorded.
As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a quirky piece of advice about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani ended his remarks with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
