Israelis have assembled around the country to mark two years since the Hamas-conducted offensive on 7 October 2023, as talks advanced in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.

The incident saw over 1,200 people killed and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as captives. It was the most most lethal day for the Jewish community since the Holocaust.

Israel responded by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has killed over 67,000 people, according to the region's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its statistics are seen as accurate by the United Nations and other world agencies.

"The bloodthirsty opponents have hit us hard, but they have not overcome us," the leader remarked on that day.

He also vowed to "realize all the objectives of the war: the release of all the captured, the removal of the Hamas government and the promise that Gaza will not create a threat to Israel".

Memorial Gatherings Across Israel

The government authorities rescheduled state commemorations until 16 October - after the completion of the religious holiday season - but ceremonies still took place around the country on Tuesday.

A remembrance service for the loved ones of Israeli citizens killed in the Hamas incident was held in Tel Aviv. Put together by the families themselves, it was televised across Israeli television channels.

A period earlier, a silent tribute was observed throughout the country.

Negotiation Meetings in Egypt

At the same time, Israeli and Hamas negotiating teams convened in the North African Red Sea resort of the Egyptian city for a continuing round of indirect talks to discuss the terms of the agreement.

A high-ranking Palestinian official familiar with the negotiations indicated that an late session of negotiations commenced at 7 PM local time.

The official said the morning session finished without significant progress, because of conflicting views over the proposed Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas wants to ensure Israel does not recommence combat after the opening period of the agreement.

He added that the discussions are "difficult and have not yet achieve any real breakthrough," but mentioned that facilitators are making efforts to close the disparities between the conflicting groups.

Critical Issues in Negotiations

  • An enduring halt to fighting
  • The swap of the captives still held by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
  • The pullout of military personnel from Gaza
  • Plans for humanitarian aid provision
  • Post-war governance of the area

Citizen Reaction

In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square that day, young Hagar - whose sibling lived through the attack on the gathering, where 378 people were murdered and numerous more were captured by Hamas fighters - explained: "Nowhere seems like home anymore and until every captive come back none of us will feel safe."

"When we see everybody home once more, we can relax again. Then we can start to heal," she continued.

Outside the prime minister's residence in Jerusalem, people gathered to show their support for the families of the captives. Israel says nearly fifty remain in confinement in Gaza, twenty of whom are believed to be living.

Activist one woman remarked: "We need do any agreement required for the hostages to return. But we truly desire promises that we will be secure."

Surveys now consistently show that approximately 70% of Israeli citizens prefer the war to conclude in exchange for the freedom of the hostages.

Gaza Conditions

At the location of Nova festival, those paying respects came together to pay their respects.

From the site, the boom of aerial bombardments and artillery could be heard just a brief space away in Gaza, where witnesses indicated the intense Israeli shelling continued.

In Gaza City, air and artillery strikes were reported in the morning of Tuesday in the western district, Rimal and zone neighbourhoods and in the eastern neighbourhood of the community, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwest.

"As the dusk arrives, the anxiety appears with it," displaced Gaza City resident a mother, whose 17-year-old son was died by an Israeli aerial attack earlier, described.

"Me and my three children are terrified of the bombings. Throughout the evening we are lying together, embracing, particularly my youngest child who puts his face on me the entire evening."

"Constantly we look at the reports to see the situation. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be achieved and that the war will come back to us."

Humanitarian Situation

The medical facility in the urban area announced it had received the remains of six people by the daytime, including three killed in an Israeli bombing in the south part al-Sabra neighbourhood.

Nasser hospital in the southern urban center of that area reported another two victims had been brought there. A person was killed by Israeli soldiers while looking for assistance to the south, medical staff reported.

The region's health ministry reported 25 of the {territ
