The Showrunner Shares He Has an Idea of How The Apple TV+ Show Will End... At the Moment.

Vince Gilligan did not foresee that the Apple TV+ show would emerge as a cultural phenomenon. “The viewers have been incredible,” he remarks. “I was surprised by the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”

Now that Season 1 of the hit series wrapping up—and Season 2 already in development—the writers' room opened up about the fan response and whether it will influence the future direction of Pluribus.

On the Incredible Audience Reaction

Anyone might to get sidetracked by the rampant praise and online debates regarding Pluribus. He is doing his best to steer clear of all that.

“It's like being constantly eating your favorite dessert and being in a state of bliss,” he explains. “It's amazing, but I hear about it through word of mouth, and that's by design. I have never searched for my own name online, nor do I ever plan to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a deep trap I know I would get lost in and then I'd be living in squalor from the hardware store and I'd be stuck in my living room.”

Despite Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no way to avoid the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to take it in stride and try not to let it alter the course of the show.

“We make no attempt to tailor anything,” says Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not impacted by what people are saying.”

“It's wiser to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan adds.

The Central Mystery: Does the creator Know the Finale of Pluribus?

Given that the creative staff aren’t being guided by fan response, does that mean they already know how Pluribus will finally conclude? The answer is yes… in a way.

“We've developed some compelling concepts about where the show might end up,” Gilligan reveals. “yet we stand ready to discard a decent plan for a superior concept. That philosophy has guided us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we find a more perfect path and I imagine we will be doing that.”

Alternatively, if they hit a wall, director and writer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to fall back on.

“I keep pitching that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and we're in there,” he says humorously, “but no one is buying it.”

Of course, why mess with the iconic TV endings?

“I'd love for Carol to awaken beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.

Pluribus can be watched on Apple TV.
