The Young Spinner Earns Unexpected Inclusion in English Test Series Squad
England have chosen a 12-man selection just 48 hours before the first Ashes Test, with Shoaib Bashir securing a surprise place.
Bashir's inclusion suggests that the tourists will delay until the day of the first Test to determine whether the venue pitch favor four seamers or the addition of a spinner.
Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are part of the 12-man squad, indicating there are no concerns about either pace bowler’s fitness.
The other seamers round out the attack, with Carse most likely to miss out if Bashir makes the final team.
Pitch Factors Favor Pace Bowlers
The England coach had been expected to opt for an pace-only lineup on a venue that has staged several previous Tests.
In those matches, the majority of dismissals have fallen to pace bowling, with only a small number to spin bowling.
Among these spin dismissals, the veteran spinner has taken 29, while overseas slow bowlers together have just a handful.
At a venue known for its speed and carry, and whose curator, the pitch preparer, stated that these characteristics are “a mainstay and not going to change,” a team relying on fast bowlers remains the probable decision.
Alternative Choices Weighed
There had been rumors that the all-rounder could be brought into the side to offer some slow bowling while also bolstering the batting lineup.
But the coach has opted to keep faith with the young spinner, having stated earlier this year that he would be his first-choice spinner for the Ashes.
Earlier, Lyon commented on the English spinner as “OK,” adding that “from my perspective, Jack Leach is still the English best spinner.”
“This is a massive role, and it can be a significant test for bowlers who haven’t done it in the previous in these conditions,” Lyon said of spin bowling in Australian Tests.
“I won't reveal my strategies so opponents come out and perform well out here.”
