Three-time National Basketball Association Most Valuable Player Nikola Jokic endured a "devastating" injury to his knee while the Denver Nuggets fell 147-123 at the Heat.

The Serbian center sustained the injury in the latter stages of the opening half in an inadvertent collision with team-mate Jones.

His teammate came down on the foot of the big man, who instantly went down to the floor clutching his leg.

The star, who is leading the NBA this season in boards and dimes, had 21 points and eight assists in the game before sustaining the problem.

The player will have an MRI scan on Tuesday to evaluate the seriousness of the injury.

"Immediately, Jokic understood there was a problem," stated Nuggets coach Adelman.

"Injuries are part of the game. Any player who gets hurt, that's difficult, particularly a player as special as Jokic. More information will come on Tuesday."

"We'll move on as a team. Clearly, right now, I'm more worried primarily about Jokic as a person and the letdown of experiencing an event of that nature."
